Every time I hear a new release from Fujifabric, I am reminded of the band's stumble with their first major album Fuji Fabric. I was pleasantly surprised with the band's previous single Ginga and their temporary return to grace. Temporary? There is the rub, could they do it again? I am happy to report the answer is yes.
As one of Japan's premiere young song writers, Shimura Masahiko continues to evolve musically. Intricately arranged, "Niji's" intertwining guitars, bass and drums take full advantage of Kanazawa Daisuke's keyboards, adopting a mid-60's dance feel. "Niji" is a reminder of what this band and Shimura Masahiko is capable of when they work at it.
Not to be ignored is the B-side of this single, "Dansu2000." Though I would have preferred new material, this remix, like "Niji," has been arranged with an emphasis on keyboards. I actually prefer the techno feel of this arrangement, though there is much to be said for the rawer original version.
Although the single renews my faith in the band, it only contained one new song. With the release of remixed previous works as the B-sides of their last two singles, Fujifabric seems to be playing their 'major label status' very safe. Despite this, Niji, marks another step in Fujifabric's journey as a major musical force to be reckoned with. |
