From the first notes of this album, it's obvious you are listening to something special, something a bit different. Personally, I'm not hugely familiar with the world of Japanese reggae/dub; however, since hearing this for the first time a few months ago I have been compelled to investigate a little further. As of yet I have found few things that can match this; of all the Dry & Heavy albums, I like this one the best.
Their sound mixes elements of reggae and dub and is characterised by catchy melodies and easily accessible lyrics written mostly in English, and this release sees them sounding more polished than ever before.
Some people dislike Likkle Mai's vocals, but I personally think they suit the music pretty well, though it's not all her as Ao Inoue takes over on vocals for some of the tracks.
A lot of the songs on this album have lyrics in English, and to be honest her pronunciation is pretty good compared to many artists (Dragon Ash, this means you).
I find this to be a very good album to relax to, especially in the evening; it just has a laid back groove to it and I will find the songs stuck in my head.
The standout tracks on this album, for me anyway are:
New Creation - In some ways this is the title track of the album and the first time you hear Likkle Mai's vocals (the first track - Reverse Again is instrumental), it has a really nice bassline to it.
Strictly Baby - More towards dub than some of the other tracks with quite a lot of effects, Ao Inoue takes over the responsibility for vocals on this one which gives a change of pace and a slightly different sound. Again its quite a slow song but it has a real groove to it.
Silent Drive - A slow track, again all in English and probably my favourite song from the album, the chorus is very catchy, as we speak this is the most listened to song on my playlist.
Bright Shining Star - A really nice close to the album, it just finishes it off perfectly, very dreamy, the ideal song to listen to before you go to bed. Likkle Mai's vocals really stand out here.
As a side note, the album Dub Creation is a remix of this album with, as the name suggests, dub versions of these songs. Some people may prefer it, but it feels a bit overdone to me because I find that the vocals get a bit lost in all the effects.
If you have never tried Japanese reggae/dub, and are curious, I would suggest this as an ideal start point. Its a polished album with very laid back, catchy songs. |
