Now, I'm no pervert, but I have to admit that the cover of Pussy Cannibal Holocaust, showing the three band members dressed in kinky french-maid uniforms, was the first thing I noticed when this was recommended to me by HMV.co.jp, and it was what made me decide to investigate further. I did a bit of online research, and found a couple of samples from the album. Both were very short (one of them only 40 seconds in length) but the raw and aggressive punk-rock sound impressed me, and I ordered the album.
Imagine my surprise when, on playing the album for the first time, I realised that in the space of just two and half minutes we had already got onto track 5. That was when I looked at the track listing, and discovered that of the first 13 tracks, only one was over a minute long. Yes, the 40 second ‘sample' I'd heard was actually an entire song! I wasn't sure whether to feel ripped off or not... had I been duped by a clever and cynical marketing ploy designed to appeal to fans of Japanese women and French-maid uniforms…? No, I reassured myself - because I bought the album under the belief that what I'd heard had been samples, not complete songs.
The question therefore is, would I have bought the album if I'd realised the ‘samples' were actually complete songs? Well, having listened to Pussy Cannibal Holocaust a number of times now, I am glad I bought it. The first 13 tracks are, as mentioned already, all exceedingly short in length. But considering their brutal and uncompromising nature, you wouldn't want them to be too long.
Pussy Cannibal Holocaust is an album of short sharp shocks – each song is raw, deafening, and bubbling over with furious take-no-shit attitude. Guitarist / vocalist Erieza Royal screams and wails like a banshee, bass guitarist Jane Royal produces the audio equivalent of someone possessed by demons, and drummer Dominique Royal pounds away in the same way as a herd of stampeding rhinoceroses.
"Luckyhole Off" is an extreme 40 second racket, in which Erieza shrieks "...Luckyhole is asshole. Luckyhole is fuckin' asshole..." as her bandmates make as much noise as possible. The song is over almost before it's begun – giving the listener no time to get bored. At 56 seconds long, "Raw Punk Bastard" is one of the longer tunes on the album, and despite its crazy ear-splitting cacophony of violent sounds, it's as catchy as hell.
The 14th and final song, is a cover of "Sister Ray" by The Velvet Underground and, like the original version, this is a long song – over 15 minutes in length – longer than the total playing time of the 13 tracks proceeding it! It's throbbing, grinding and repetitive, and the pressure builds up until, after eight minutes, the sonic distortion kicks in and things become less and less song-like, before finally collapsing into a screaming wall of noise. It makes for a perfect ending to the album.
Oh yeah, and Anadorei means ‘ass-slave.' Nice! |
