Since their creation seven years ago, Kicell has been one of the most gentle yet sophisticated pop rock bands to come out of Japan. Formed by brothers Tsujimura Takefumi and Tsujimura Tomoharu in 1999, Kicell originated in Kyoto within the same music circle as Quruli. Soon after releasing their mini-album Nijimutaiyou and single Horohoro, on an indie label, Kicell received interest in 2001 from Speedstar Records, which was also the label home to their friends in Quruli.
The brothers' sound has been consistent since their first mini-album. Older brother Tsujimura Takefumi controls the mic with his soothing, peaceful voice and plays light guitar and sparse electronic effects while Tomoharu plays bass (and occasionally a musical saw) and does back-up vocals. Kicell create a very dreamy, ambient soundscape while still escaping a completely minimalistic approach to their music.
In June of 2001, Kicell released the atmospheric record Yume under Speedstar Records. In 2002 the band continued growing musically and released one album, Kinmirai, along with four singles. They followed it up in 2004 with Mado ni Chikyuu, which had them experimenting with different kinds of vibes while becoming more accessible to a wider range of listeners.
In 2005, Kicell released Tabi, their fourth album, along with their eighth single and a two-disc "best of" release named Tower. The first disc of Tower was one new song named after the album, their biggest venture yet as it's over 25 minutes long. In April of 2005, Kicell finally reached the shores of America as they traveled to New York to open for an exhibition of Japanese artist Murakami Takashi, who has stated them as being his favorite band.
Kicell have become fairly popular throughout the music and art scenes in Japan, with no album of theirs selling less than 20,000 copies. This year they released their first DVD, which features eleven songs played live. Kicell, who have played with English speaking artists such as Badly Drawn Boy and Ron Sexsmith, have continued to refine their odd yet unique mix of folk rock and electronic ambiance. In late December 2006, they transferred to record label Kakubarhythm, which is also the home of Your Song Is Good and Sakerock. The band is currently keeping themselves busy by touring all over Japan.
