Profile
To the people of the 1970s, the future is now. But, rather disappointingly, we're still not riding around in flying cars wearing standard issue jumpsuits and sleek sunglasses. But don't tell that to Polysics. Decked out in all the gear that you'd expect of Buck Rogers, they top the self-styled "Tokyo Newwave of Newwave" scene.

Polysics' influences are not hard to find, with guitarist/vocalist Hayashi himself saying that he originally started the band due to his love of Devo. With such strong new-wave roots, it'd be easy to dismiss Polysics as yet another of the New-wave revival bands in the vein of The Faint, but Polysics set themselves apart with their frenetic performance and downright wackiness. In fact, this wackiness, the sort of over the top, so-uncool-it's-cool appeal, is exactly what Polysics is going for. Punk-rock style guitar, bass and drum parts are punctuated with hysterical screaming and synthesizer parts reminiscent of the 8-bit soundtrack found on the original game-boy.

Polysics was started by guitarist Hayashi in 1997 due to the aforementioned love of Devo. Soon their insane live shows, including keyboardist POLY2 throwing bread into the crowd while hula-hooping caught the attention of the scene and record labels. In February 1999, their first album 1st P was released on UK project. After 1st P, POLY2 left the band, sparking a change from electro-pop to a more rock-oriented style on their second album A.D.S.R.M! (also on UK project).

In 2000, Polysics made their first appearances in America, playing at SXSW, and numerous other dates. In April, they changed labels and released two singles on Ki/oon records, XCT and each life each end. These were followed by their major debut NEU in September and an all-Japan tour. In 2001, the band returns to being a 4-piece with the addition of Fumi on Bass/Vocal/Synth. In March and April, Polysics release their overseas debut HEY! BOB! MY FRIEND in Korea and America respectively. Since then they have released three more full lengths, enlisted the talents of producer Alex Newport for a mini album KAJAKAJA GOO, released several live DVDs, and released a best of album POLYSICS OR DIE!!!!. In October of 2005, Polysics Now is the time! almost simultaneously in Japan, America, and England.
