Named out of respect for reggae legend Burning Spear, Dry & Heavy's roots reggae influences can be heard in this band's classic dub sound. Fronted for the most part by female vocalist Likkle Mai, the band's ethereal melodies bring an authenticity to Dry & Heavy's new roots music. Dry & Heavy was originally formed in 1991, as a rhythm section for the collaboration of Audio Active members, Shigemoto Nanao [drums ] and Takeshi Akimoto [bass]. After four years of constant touring and recording experience, this rhythm section emerged in 1995, with its current lineup as the band Dry & Heavy. Though originally an outlet for Shigemoto Nanao and Takeshi Akimoto, Dry & Heavy's focus slowly changed to highlight its vocalists, Likkle Mai and Ao Inoue. In 1997, the band released its debut album Dry & Heavy on the Olive label. The album draws on the band's roots reggae influences with a definite 'Audio Active' influence. Signing with Beat Records and Green Tea Label, the band released their dub inspired second album One Punch in Japan [Beat Records, 1998], UK and France [Green Tea, 1999]. In 2001, founding member Takeshi Akimoto abrubtly announced he was leaving the group and Audio Active's current bassist Pata, stepped in to fill the void. Other albums by Dry & Heavy include a compilation of Dry & Heavy's remixes by dub legend King Jammy, entitled Jammy Meets Dry & Heavy in the Jaws of the Tiger [2001], From Creation [2002] and Full Contact [2000], the later being one of the band's biggest selling albums to date. From the experimental feel of their self-titled debut, the simplicity of One Punch's dub reggae sound, to the more commercial reggae of From Creation, Dry & Heavy continues to evolve their sound, pushing themselves and the genre they've become associated with.
