Based out of hometown Nagoya, asana is the work of one man, Asano Yuusuke. The project was originally conceived during Asano's travels to Bali, Indonesia, where the sounds of insects and frogs piqued his musical curiosities. He started working on asana after returning to Nagoya in 2000.
From the beginning, Asano worked toward "organic post-rock" as a musical ideal, and asana's sound reflects this accordingly. Asano puts numerous instruments to use, from dreamy-sounding brass and woodwinds to acoustic strings and conservative helpings of percussion. Hints of jazz prevail in the familiar song structure which usually introduces and builds around a simple theme. asana's relaxed style is a hybrid of post-rock, ambient, and minimalist electronica sharing more in common with Tortoise's acoustic leanings than the soft-loud modulations standardized by Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Mogwai.
asana initially recorded under the name "MOKHTAR" with Nagoya indie label THANKS GIVING, its debut coming on a compilation in 2001. The following year asana issued a four-track demo before releasing its first full-length kupu kupu, which became a crossover success with both rock and ambient listeners. By this point Asano had been collaborating with a crowd of local talent, both in the studio and on stage. The members of THANKS GIVING labelmate ALL OF THE WORLD joined asana as support musicians for a nation-wide tour. Meanwhile, Asano's collaborating resulted in two more albums. The first, ini apa? is composed of kupu kupu tracks remixed by various collaborators and acquaintances of the band. The second (and most recent), split, is just that - a split release with labelmate and former DJ Tanaka Akira. Though asana has had little in the way of new material in over two years, the purported poster child of the growing Nagoya scene is still far from abandoning his organic brainchild.
