A gargantuan band featuring no fewer than six members, 100s (pronounced "hyaku shiki") already has goals of byzantine proportions with their debut album OZ. Skipping straight to major label Toshiba-EMI with no time spent on the indie circuit, 100s may appeared to have come from out of nowhere, but in fact the band's history is closely tied to frontman Nakamura's Kazuyoshi's days as a solo musician.
Nakamura's singer-songwriter recording career began in 1997, spanning four albums and one best-of, including 2000's critically acclaimed ERA. At 2001's Rock in Japan Festival, Nakamura first performed under the moniker 100s, together with Ikeda (formerly of Super Butter Dog and supergroup Rolling Bloody Jr.High!), Tamada and Yamaguchi. The group recorded three singles and an album (also titled 100s) together, all under the name Nakamura Kazuyoshi. In 2003, Nakamura had officially reformed his group under 100s and brought in two more guitarists, filling out the band to a healthy six members. Two singles later, the band dropped a bomb with their album's first release and Oricon top-10 breaker, OZ.
With 21 tracks and over 70 minutes of playtime, OZ was a highly ambitious album from the beginning, its complexity only compounded by the large ensemble 100s had become. Over the course of more than two years, the six-member team planned out the album together, track by track. The members all stress that teamwork and shared duties played a critical role. Nakamura laid the groundwork for OZ, pushing it in the direction of the Who's concept albums. A firm believer of humanity's perception of reality being shaped by dreams and feelings, Nakamura envisioned the world of the appropriately titled OZ as a meeting of dreams and reality, where the "wizard" can freely come and go.
For lack of other material, the musical styles ventured forth on OZ define 100s' sound. Nakamura's strong, yet soft voice plays the melodic guide in each of the songs, and at times is a trifle reminiscent of 70s disco pop, especially with his clear falsetto. Much of 100s' style can be best described as first-wave British invasion rock with bits of psychedelia (despite indications, this is assuredly not a progressive rock band), all filtered through sensible 90s moderate alternative. Together with some piano ballads and a couple of slightly thrashier numbers, 100s covers a remarkably broad range. Not to mention, with three guitarists, there is always something of interest playing in a 100s song.
After touring in support of OZ, 100s dropped 10Oz., a DVD with music videos and live clips. 100s shows no sign of slowing down, so should they decide to start working on the follow-up to OZ now, the rest of the world's probably got until at least 2007 to be prepared for it.
