Profile
One colorful aspect of metropolitan life in Japan that is often overlooked is the street performers. Serenading passers-by with their voice and sometimes a guitar, these musicians are often highly skilled and can attract throngs of admirers. And, every once in a while, one of these amateur performers is scouted and picked up by record label. And that's exactly how dorlis' early career played out.

Originally trained in classical guitar, dorlis dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to begin performing on the streets of her hometown Okayama. Soon after she hitchhiked to play on sidewalks across the nation. Her unique, "swinging guitar" style and smooth vocals drew large audiences wherever she set up. Upon returning to her hometown, famed producer Matsubara Ken (whose resume includes Misia, Hirai Ken and BoA) happened by one of her performances, and remarked that dorlis' music evoked strong nostalgic feelings. It wasn't long until dorlis had signed a deal with Supa Records and got her debut single Hitorigoto Mitai ni Aishiteta out the door at the end of 2002.

Within the next year and a half, dorlis' career was rapidly on the rise with the release of three more singles and culminating with the full album swingin' street. Her upbeat style was undoubtedly bright jazz-pop, featuring liberal helpings of her swingin' acoustic guitar. Many of her songs were tinged by bits of bossa nova and folk music as well. Comparatively, dorlis's songs retain the relaxed and simpler style of contemporaries Port of Notes, (albeit with a quickened pace) as opposed to UA's dense and cerebral outings.

In January 2005 dorlis' new career caught another break as she penned a deal with Victor Entertainment and put out her major debut single Mariposa. dorlis was looking to introduce herself to wider audiences, and in Mariposa aimed for a single that would be her own "business card" that sounded like a compilation of her earlier material. Another single and her major debut album Swingin' Street 2 followed her first single with Victor. In November, dorlis released Swingin' Party, which included four new songs in addition to older tracks recorded live in a big band setting.
