Profile
Tsubakiya Shijuusou's astronomical rise in the world of Japanese Rock is a rather unlikely one. In an environment where style often reigns over substance, Tsubakiya's attire is simple. Where the Western reigns, Tsubakiya incorporates Japanese traditional melodies and shuns English. However, this is not to say that there is not a good reason for their newfound popularity. Tsubakiya's melodies are the product of prodigal performances by all three members, punctuated by the haunting and desperate vocals of singer and guitarist Yuuji Nakada.

While Tsubakiya's songs range from jazz flavored rock to ballads, the style they most often and most proficiently execute is melodic hard rock. Nagata's growling distorted bass lines compliment Nakada's driving, varied guitar work. The guitar melodies draw upon various influences, including straight forward hard rock riffs, jazz, and even hints of Japanese and Spanish traditional melodies. Kodera's drumming is arguably the most important part of the band, crashing forward with unstoppable force one moment, and then slipping into a syncopated groove the next. What makes Tsubakiya stand out from other hard rock groups the most is the incredible precision and frequency with which they turn a song on its head, switching meters, styles, or dropping out completely.

Tsubakiya was formed in Sendai in 2000 but moved to Tokyo in 2001. After a series of member changes, they settled on the current lineup in November of 2002. After self-releasing two albums (both of which sold more than 2000 copies), they were picked up by Daizawa Records, the label that spawned Syrup16g and Remioromen. Their first self-titled mini-album was released August 27, 2003 containing 6 songs. Their distinctive sound and Nakada's enticing vocals and lyrics took Tokyo by storm and soon spread throughout the country.

Riding the wake of the incredible response to their mini-album, Tsubakiya toured throughout Japan, and then settled into the studio. Their first full album Shinku Naru Shouzou was released April 21, 2004, building on the foundation laid by their mini album. Since then, Tsubakiya has performed the famous "One Man Show" concert tour in Osaka, Sendai and Tokyo and played the Rock in Japan festival November 2004.

During the beginning of 2005, Nakada Yuuji scored a starring role in the movie "Dare ga Kokoro ni mo Ryuu ga Nemuru", and the band released a single Ajisai/Rasen Kaidan that also served somewhat as a soundtrack for the movie.

The band's much anticipated second full album Bara to Diamond was released in September of 2005. Three full weeks on the Tower Records Shibuya indie charts testified to the album's popularity, but some older fans were turned off by a sudden turn towards a more mainstream poppy sound.

The band is currently writing songs for their next album and playing occasional shows in Tokyo.
