The term "emo" does not seem to be seen in a positive light nowadays. At one time describing early purveyors of the punk/hardcore subgenre such as Fugazi and Rites of Spring, whose songs ushered a youth movement toward social awareness a personal growth, the term has now come to be associated with skinny upper middle class white boys in bands whose lead singers pre-pubescently whine about their girlfriends breaking up with them. But don't tell that to THE LOCAL ART, a four piece band consisting of members who wear the emo badge proudly. So proudly, in fact, that each member wears a white shirt with the word "Emo" emblazoned across the chest during live shows. This dedication to emo can be seen in their music, which takes many of the stereotypical elements of "emotional" rock: songs outlining a personal outlook towards the future, soft arpeggiated guitar passages juxtaposed with powerfully loud and crunchy chords, a vocalist who can move from a whisper to a forceful scream, and even the occasional violin accompaniments. "If there are people who find that the emotional part of our music is kind of emo, then I'd be really happy." says Okuda Satoshi, drummer and vocalist. Heavily influenced by the United States, THE LOCAL ART takes those "emotional" elements and brings them to Japan, instilling their own flavor through a unique lineup. Sandwiched into a drum set and surrounded by two guitarists and a bass player, Satoshi is left to the task of not only keeping time and rhythm, but also being the voice of the band. He manages this surprisingly well considering the complexity of the job. Guitarists Ouno Ikkou and Yokouchi Takemasa share melody and accompaniment duties while Inagaki Manabu keeps the band steady and moving forward. In 1996 under the moniker SHAMPOOHAT, Satoshi and Ikkou (then the bass player) originally formed the band to cover Hi-Standard, Green Day, and Face to Face. They would be featured in various demo releases, splits, and comps until the 2000 when SHAMPOOHAT released its first single under moolguy records. In that same year they cemented their current lineup of Satoshi, Ikkou, Takemasa, and Manabu. However, the band wouldn't really make a mark for itself until its name changed to THE LOCAL ART in 2002. From there they were featured the the US Emo Diaries 9 compilation in 2003, a proud feat for any Japanese band. The band followed that up by released two full length albums in 2004. The first, KOTODAMA, concentrated on remembering harsh experiences while still maintaining a positive outlook of the future. "'There's no end' is the kind of statement that I wanted to make with the work," remarks Okuda. NEIRO continues that message with a lighter and more upbeat overall sound. Moving forward is the key, and THE LOCAL ART seems to be taking their words to heart as they power forward into the future.
