Profile
One wild live performance at a time, detroit7 is becoming quite a notorious band. Club managers and enthused audiences alike describe detoit7's shows as unforgettable and surging with energy, especially from vocalist Nabana. True to their name, detroit7 plays raw garage rock with heavy influence from the Detroit scene. Not the modern scene as represented by The White Stripes, but the late 60s and early 70s dominated by heavyweights The Stooges and The MC5.

detroit7 was born in 2001 when Nabana, still a university student, hit it off with Tabei at the pachinko parlor where they were co-workers. They met Kotajima through the musical network within the university. The members shared similar interests in music, the aforementioned Detroit rockers in addition to The Velvet Underground and The Stone Roses. They also had an affinity for Japanese bands, especially The Blue Hearts and Unicorn.

Initially the members would jam together in the studio with only vague conceptions guiding them. As their sound began to jell, they were deciding who to have take up vocals and sent Nabana into the studio. The results surprised all the members. Nabana's vocals weren't what anyone expected, and not at all like the typical Japanese female vocals. Her rough-hewn and husky singing sounds somewhat similar in tone to UA's and adds a lot of color to detroit7's sound (and doubtlessly she accounts for much of their popularity).

Like many fledgling bands detroit7 started their career playing live shows in Shimokitazawa's Club 251, and produced their first recording Ordinary Madness in September of 2002. In 2003 the band's operations took off. They opened for Okuda Tamio's "okuda tamio Live EZ" tour in February and Teenage Fanclub's Japan tour in March. In September they started their first nationwide tour before releasing their mini-album Vertigo with major label Universal two months later, and finished off the year in the Count Down Japan 03/04 festival.

detroit7 ramped up their activity even further in 2005, releasing their first album in January to an indie label under Sony. Bigger news came in early June as the band announced it was taking its garage rock to label giant Toshiba-EMI, where it has recorded two more EPs of primarily new material. As detroit7 continues to thrill broader audiences, their ever-growing fanbase has very expectant hopes for the high-octane group, including Club 251's booking manager, who firmly believes the day detroit7 takes the stage at Lollapalooza is not far off.
